Kit printers are ideal for learning and exploring how 3D printers work. The Zonestar P802Q (review) is a representative of this product line. With a metal frame and a mainboard that can control up to 6 motors it offers many upgrade options. Other printers of this type that I have tested are the Zonestar M8R2 (review), the Zonestar P802QR2 (review), the Tronxy P802 (review), and the Anet A8 (review). Devices for tinkerers like me!
The kit printers from the early days are now only niche products, because (almost) fully assembled printers aren't really cheaper any longer and the device is quickly ready for use. An example of such a printer is the Kywoo Tycoon (review).
Large printers, thus devices with a build volume of around 300x300x400mm, meanwhile became the standard size. An example of such a printer is the Artillery Sidewinder X2 (review).
A list of all 3D printers that I have tested so far, including a comment on buying cheap printers in distant countries, can be found in the overview of tested 3D printers.
Laser Engravers / Cutters
Laser modules are now very inexpensive to get. The mechanics required are not very complex, resulting in affordable laser engravers or cutters for ambitious hobbyists. The Ortur Laser Master 2 Pro is one such device that I have already reviewed. In addition to protective goggles, a safety box with a buit in ventillation is a very useful accessory, because lasers burn or vaporize material and so generate an ugly smell in your workshop otherwise. Small, portable devices can be taken outside and operated there such as the Aufero Laser 1 (Review) or the Aufero Laser 2(Review).

CNC Router
I tested this kit of the CNC 3018Pro from Mostics, for which there is also a laser module as an extra available. You shouldn't expect miracles of precision from these machines, but they are very suitable for gaining basic knowledge in handling CNC machines and the results can be significantly improved with modifications.

There are a variety of accessories for Arduinos and Raspberry Pi available. Plenty of packages with many sensors, WLAN or Bluetooth extensions, plug-in cables and much more can be sourced at very affordable prices. I will show more on how this periphery can be used in future chapters on physical computing and IoT.
