Hi Norbert,

I tried replicating your optical_mouse project with the Mouse/M-SBF96 from Logitech, which contains the ADNS2610 I believe. For my first attempt, I soldered the Data,clock,Vdd and ground directly onto the cables of the mouse. That didn't really work, because the mouse wasn't even able to initialize. For the second attempt, I soldered the four cables to the appropriate connections on the sensor itself. Now the values change even if the mouse isn't moving.

Me: I only checked that code with an old mechanical PS/2 mouse. Did you use an Arduino UNO? To what pins of what chip did you solder the cables directly? Some photos of your project could be helpful.

To make the extruder really work, the design of each part depends on the design of all other parts. Not until the whole thing extrudes plastic at a constant, predictable rate I can say what each part must look like. I have redesigned all of them more than once. Be patient...

What was the exact command you used to start the program?
Also, if you start the program from the command line, make sure that there is no instance of engrave running in the background with:

before starting engrave.

Me: During the past weeks/months I have indeed machined core parts for the new design, but I also had to redesign those core elements more than once to make that new extruder work same as the proof of concept prototype V3. It still isn't where it should be, so there is more work to be done. I will of course post an update when V4 works fine. Be patient, creating something totally new usually breaks any schedule given ;-)

Hallo Norbert! Ich habe diese CNC im Jahre 2016 nachgebaut und hab sie jetzt seit knapp 2 Wochen wieder aktiviert, nachdem ich bei einer anderen, selbst entworfenen kläglich gescheitert bin. Dein CNC-Entwurf ist zwar langsamer als andere, aber das reicht mir vollkommen. Und wenn mal was kaputt geht, kann man es ganz leicht und kostengünstig reparieren. Ich bin froh, dass ich die damals nur „beiseite“ gestellt habe und jetzt wieder nutzen kann. Vielen Dank für dein Projekt! Mach bitte weiter so!

the original message, then decrypt it to get back the original. Yes, I know I am a skeptic :)  Works good.

Hallo Norbert, in einem Deiner Videos über 3d Drucker Test's hast Du eine Schraube mit Mutter gedruckt. Hast Du dabei mit Toleranzen konstruiert oder hast Du mit skalieren beim Druck gearbeitet.

Me: Für solche Fälle füge ich immer einen Parameter für Toleranzen in openSCAD ein. Mit ein wenig "Try and Error" bekommt man über die Jahre ein Gespür für den richtigen Wert.

I'm interested in this socket! FPC cables vary in pitch width, number of conductors, etc. A specific socket is needed, and I don't have the cable here to measure

The pitch on the cable side is 1mm and a total of 16 pins is needed.

Me: Zunächst gilt es, den Extruder weiter in Richtung Serie zu entwickeln, das beansprucht meine ganze Zeit. Das Ding soll in erster Linie ja Standard-Kunststoffe wie PLA, PET, ABS und dergleichen recyclen können. Zucker steht daher nicht allzu weit oben auf meiner Liste. Mehr zum Extruder gibt's (hoffentlich) demnächst.

Me: Those sensors of old, ball based computer mice might work in principle, but will deliver a high number of pulses per revolution. Your microcontroller must be able to process them all. The threaded rod drive is way too slow to be used as 3D printer.

Hallo Herr Heinz, ich drucke seit Jahren it einfach Extender. Wünsche mir seit langem einen 2es Hotend um wasserlösliches Stützmaterial zu verwenden. Ist dies bei diesem Drucker Möglich. Danke Lothar Alb

Me: Im Prinzip: Ja. Der Teudel steckt aber immer im Detail. Die beiden Druckköpfe exakt auf gleiche Höhe auszurichten ist knifflig und immer nur bedingt möglich. Dann habe ich ja auch im Video gezeigt, dass der Druckkopf an jeder kleinen Erhebung (z.B. weil an der Stelle ein Retract durchgeführt wurde) gleich zweimal angehoben wird, was sich im Laufe der Zeit zu einem merklichen Fehler aufaddiert. Dann ist da noch das Problem, dass aus dem momentan inaktiven Hotend immer etwas Material austritt usw. usf. Der Zonestar ist ein billiger Drucker, um das mal auszupropieren, aber um wirklich einfach und vor allem gut mit zwei Materialien drucken zu können, muss man tiefer in die Tasche greifen. Sinnvoll sind da Drucker mit "Toolchangern", die das Hotend im Betrieb wechseln können und das jeweils inaktive Hotend in eine Parkposition fahren.

Me: How on earth should I know what you can do and what you can't?
I guess you want to know if this machine is capable of being run with Linux CNC as it is. I haven't tried, but since the DC motors can't be controlled with Step/Dir commands (at least not with the electronics I have described in this chapter), I guess it won't work without modifications on the electronics. The most easy way should be to use normal, bipolar stepper motors and grbl on the Arduino Uno.

As you already announced the printer Zonestar QR2 is no longer available. Unfortunately I could not find a used one neither. Therefore I have to look for a different model. If I understand correctly the double nozzle is no criteria, right? I guess one of the biggest challanges will be to bring the stepper motor which originally drives the filament to another speed in order to drive the granulate feeding scroll, right? How can the speed be adapted? Is it possible by a slicer or only by hardware?

Me: If you are looking for a cheap printer with highly accessible components, you can also buy an A8 or A6 ot printers like that. I have listed available models in a table on my chapter Shopping tips.
You can tune the extruder feedrate in your slic3r with the "Extrusion multiplier". You might have to increase the max extruder speed as well, which is done through the printer menue or through Gcode commands (if the printer firmware accepts this).
If your extruder still isn't fast enough, you can cut the M2 and M3 pin of the motor driver to force half step mode.

It is my dream to feed it with residual plastic, collected in nature. I own an Anycubic i3 Mega X printer. This one I would keep in original condition. However for your granulate extruder I would purchase another printer. Can you recommend a specific model?

Me: The only printer I have made the extruder work with, yet, is the Zonestar. This type of kit printer is good for experimentation due to the good accessible mechanics and mainboard. Today I have updated my column Shopping tips that lists a couple of these kit printers (the Zonestar seems to be no longer available).
Version 3 is a proof of concept design. So if you make a copy, be prepared for a rumble ride to (eventual) success. I am currently working on an extruder design that is meant to be machined (I have started one of my CNC routers). If you can wait, you might get something better suitable for processing waste plastics. If you want to start now with this version, keep me updated!
