Animation of an asynchronous motor:

Functionality

As described at the previous chapter, the functionality of those engines is based on induction. In place of a permanent magnet or an electromagnet being moved sideways past a conductive loop, the rotating magnetic field of a three-phase electric power is used to induce currents and magnetic fields at the rotor windings. The principle of rotating magnetic fields has been described at the chapter about the synchronous motor. The armature is pulled around following the direction of the rotating magnetic field of the stator. The speed of the armature is always lower than those of the rotating field (at least somewhat) - the rotating speeds are asynchronous. The higher the difference of rotating speeds, the higher the currents being generated at the windings of the armature. For this reason the forces acting on the armature and therewith the torque is increasing. The maximum torque is reached when the rotor comes to stop. The torque becomes zero if the armature is rotating with a revolution speed being synchronous to those of the rotating magnetic field of the stator.
